Day One – Falmouth, Cornwall.

When going on a cruise to Iceland and Greenland, you tend to pack appropriately namely lots of layers and fleeces, therefore the weather today at our first stop, Falmouth, came as a bit of a shock. After the very poor and wet summer that we have experienced so far this year we were greeted by a hot and sunny day when we opened our curtains this morning.

We enjoyed a leisurely breakfast in the dining room, listening to tales from a retired superintendent from a county jail in California, before taking the tender into Falmouth itself. Princess don’t call them tenders any more and now refer to them as water shuttles but they are basically the lifeboats used to ferry passengers ashore. Soon we were in the picturesque harbour of Falmouth.

With it being the height of the summer holidays the town was crowded but we had a very enjoyable walk up through the shops. The bunting was out on the streets to celebrate our arrival, although it might have been for some other reason.

There are two main foods which most people associate with Cornwall, Cornish pasties and Cream Teas. With the time now approaching midday a Cream Tea was out of the question so a pasty it was to be.

We opted for the medium sized traditional pasties, not wishing to appear greedy, in a lovely cafe with views across the harbour. An excellent choice and if you are ever in Falmouth this is the place…..

After a further walk around (to burn off some of the pasty calories), we took another opportunity for a photo in the harbour.

The ride back to the ship was a little different as the ship had utilised some of the local boats to assist in the tendering process and we were lucky enough to sail back on “The Queen of Falmouth”.

Half way through the journey our boat pulled alongside another vessel to take on board pasties for the crew and then we sped on to our home for the next few weeks, Caribbean Princess.

Tonight we sail towards our next port of call, Cobh in Ireland. Hopefully the weather will remain as pleasant as today.
